🔫 Tragedy Strikes Manhattan: Gunman Kills Four, Including Police Officer, Before Taking Own Life
New York, July 29:
Chaos erupted in Midtown Manhattan Monday evening after a lone gunman stormed a high-rise office building and opened fire, leaving four people dead—including a New York City police officer—and injuring another. The attacker later fatally shot himself on the 33rd floor of the building.
The shooter has been identified as 27-year-old Shane Tamura, a resident of Las Vegas, who reportedly drove cross-country to New York. Authorities confirmed that Tamura had a history of mental health struggles and are currently investigating his motive.
The incident began just after 6:30 p.m. local time when Tamura entered the skyscraper located on Park Avenue, carrying what police described as an assault-style rifle. He fired multiple rounds in the lobby, then took an elevator to the 33rd floor, where he continued his rampage.
Among those killed was Officer Didarul Islam, 36, a security officer stationed at the building who also served in the NYPD. Originally from Bangladesh, Islam was a father of two, with a third child expected soon. City officials praised him as a hero who sacrificed his life protecting others.
New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch stated in a press briefing, “Officer Islam was doing his duty with bravery. He made the ultimate sacrifice to ensure the safety of those inside the building.”
Witnesses described scenes of panic as people fled the building or barricaded themselves in offices using furniture. “It sounded like fireworks at first,” said one eyewitness. “But then we saw people running and screaming, and we knew something was terribly wrong.”
Tamura spared at least one individual in the elevator area, according to police, before moving to a hallway where he took his own life with a shot to the chest.
The building, which houses high-profile tenants including the NFL, KPMG, and Blackstone, was quickly evacuated. Nearby streets were sealed off, and transit services were briefly suspended.
Officers later searched the suspect’s double-parked vehicle and recovered a revolver, multiple loaded magazines, and identification linking the car to Tamura in Nevada.
One additional victim remains hospitalized in critical but stable condition.
Authorities confirmed that Tamura acted alone and emphasized there is no further threat to the public. Investigations are ongoing.
